Just like every other year, you have to prepare your tax returns. Have you been receiving all the deductions and tax credits that you are entitled to because of your handicap situation?

Based on personal circumstances, a person may be entitled to tax reductions in the form of deductions or tax credits.

CREDITS / DEDUCTIONS

Here are some credits and deductions for people with disabilities and for individuals who take care of a person with disabilities.

1. Certificate Respecting an Impairment
2. Deductions and refundable tax credits for medical expenses
3. Expenses for medical care not available in your area
4. Tax credit for care givers
5. Tax credit for respite (rest) for caregivers
6. Tax credit for volunteer respite services
7. Deduction for products and services supporting a handicapped person

1. CERTIFICATE RESPECTING AN IMPAIRMENT

In the past, have you been claiming the amounts you have been entitled to based on significant and prolonged physical disabilities? If you haven’t been making a claim it would be good to know that previous unclaimed amounts can be recovered retroactively (at least in part), and you do not need to complete all the forms for each year that you misssed out.

To benefit from the deductions and credits, start by asking your doctor to fill these 2 forms:

6. TAX CREDIT FOR VOLUNTEER RESPITE SERVICES

This is for person providing respite (gave a caregiver a break) services for an informal caregiver of a person with a significant long-term disability, The person providing respite may be entitled to a refundable tax credit.
