A variety of community support services exist that can be very useful.
ORGANIZATIONS
1 - Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNIH)
Post-Polio Clinic staffed by Dr. Daria Trojan, physiatrist (514-398-8911) and Dr. Diane Diorio, neurologist. Preferably referred by a family physician.

2 - Polio Quebec Association
It organizes general meetings in the spring and autumn for all people who had polio and their families. Guest lecturers are invited and medical information is also given. The meetings are designed to offer information on various topics, to discuss and exchange different problems and to offer general and emotional support. The Association also publishes bi-annual newsletters and organizes social outings. Membership: $20.00 per year. For information, look over this website or contact us!
3 - C.L.S.C.
Local Community Service Centre provides basic health care services and check-ups from a multi-disciplinary team comprised generally of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers. They also have visiting homemakers who provide help in the household and with personal care; for example, they can offer assistance in cleaning the house and bathing. They may also help with some shopping, banking and laundry. A service of visiting nurses can also be helpful to the patient who is not fully autonomous.

Take note that since 2004, the CLSC and CHSLD merged together (often with general and specialized hospital centers also) to create CSSS (Health and Social Services Centers). CSSS are found at the heart of each local services network to ensure accessibility, continuity and quality of the services intended for the population of the local territory.

7 - Disabled Parking Permit

A mobile parking permit for use by either a vehicle driver or passenger who is disabled can be obtained from the SAAQ (Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec) at the cost of 15$. Emissions of the permit : Montreal (514-873-7620), Quebec (418 643-7620) or toll-free : (1-800-361-7620). If ever, in one of these two situations, a police officer emits by error a parking ticket whereas your label was correctly suspended on the rear view mirror of your vehicle, do not hesitate to contest this error by following the instructions on the back of the ticket.
8 - Meals-on-Wheels
This service brings hot meals to the person's home. Referral from the CLSC is required for the use of these services, and what is offered will depend on the individual's needs.

9 - Financial aid
Travel and lodging expenses for patients of the Polio Clinic can sometimes be supported by le Programme transport et hébergement pour les personnes handicapées. Contact your local C.L.S.C.
